Opening Day 2004:

Detroit Tigers Win Again!?

Detroit opens and continues win streak; Pudge & Higgy lead

DETROIT, MICHIGAN  APRIL 8, 2004

Are the Tigers suddenly a competitive professional baseball team?  After losing 119 games last season, the 2004 version of the club has stormed off to a 4-0 start.

After sweeping the Blue Jays, the Tigers held their home opener yesterday in front of 40,000 guys between 30 and 40 yrs old who snuck out of work.  The Tigers got off to a slow start, but charged back in the late innings to pull away from the Twins.  Is this run for real?  Check back in this May.

The highlight for me was seeing World Series champ Pudge Rodriguez.  I guess people are sticking with calling him "Pudge" rather than using the more common nicknames for dudes named Rodriguez which is taking their first initial and slapping on a 'Rod' (e.g., Yankee Alex Rodriguez = A-Rod).  I guess iRod was no good given the Apple iPod craze, and I can understand why calling a guy "P-Rod" might present problems with the FCC.  Sights and sounds:

State of Michigan Gov. Granholm was seen before the game.  One fan labeled the governor "a handsome woman".

Star catcher and new Tiger Ivan 'Pudge' Rodriguez punches a single in the shadow of Kaline, Newhouser & Gehringer.  Can you see the ball? Mack, Rambo, Ks and Awes before the game.  It was a little chilly, although warmed up a bit as the game progressed.  The Tigers new advertising strategy involves a lot of Franks and Brawny Lads
