Mad rush to find flawed Tuscon Wisconsin quarters

SALINE, MICHIGAN  FEBRUARY 10, 2005

A slight "flaw" or irregularity on of the state-issued quarters has resulted in a coin hunt for folks trying to make a quick buck. A unknown number of the error quarters issued for Wisconsin and minted and distributed in Tucson, Arizona, are reported to have an extra leaf on the ear of corn depicted on the coin.

An unknown number of the quarters issued for the State of Wisconsin are reported to have an extra leaf on the ear of corn depicted on the coin.  Find one and your two bits will turn into a cool a value of somewhere between $300-$600, according to recent auctions on eBay.  People are quickly trying to round up the coins by buying up quantities of rolls of the state quarters.

There are 2 known varieties of the Wisconsin coin flaw - one with an extra leaf on the coin folded down, (pictured above), and another with the same leaf folded up.

What caused the "flaw" in the Wisconsin state quarter from Tucson?  Well, unlike other famous flaws such as the 1955 and 1972 pennies that was stamped twice (or "double die" as it is commonly known), this irregularity must have been caused by a deliberate alternate die.  The U.S. Mint does not know what caused this but is investigating.

There is some talk on the internet and elsewhere that this is some type of scam.  The quarters have shown up in Texas and in Tucson, Arizona, and people have already speculated on the total number of the coins distributed.  More to come.

People are buying and selling the coins on eBay today.  I'd be suspicious of the "unchecked" rolls of quarters that people are offering on eBay:
