2005 Summer Movie Round-Up

Duke Boys have more to worry about than ol' Boss Hog

By Katie Armstrong

DETROIT, MICHIGAN  AUGUST 25, 2005

You know her and love her.  Katie's back to review this year's hottest films including the Dukes of Hazzard, the Aristocrats and the Wedding Crashers.  Read on as Katie struts her stuff and takes Hollywood to task.

The Dukes of Hazzard

Oh, the Duke boys. Did you know that they have been in trouble with the law since the day they was born?  Well somebody should be arrested for making this movie!  All I really remember from the original series is my crush on Bo (my sister had a Dukes punching bag and I'm pretty sure I kissed his plastic likeness a few times).   Back to the movie: it is pretty fun I guess. Johnny Knoxville and Stiffler are likable enough. Jessica Simpson is predictably bland. Fans of Super Troopers (me) will appreciate the cameos- especially the campus cop 'mother of God' bit. Other than that no real surprises, just good ole boys having lots and lots of car chases.

The Aristocrats

You know you are in trouble when Gilbert Gottfried is the funniest thing in a movie. I have to admit I had high hopes of being floored by this movie.  It was without doubt raunchy, but it was never really hilarious. There were a few laugh-out-loud moments but for the most part I was just waiting for it to get really funny. If you don't know what a rusty trombone is, you should see this movie to find out. If you do know what a rusty trombone is, I really hope it's not from experience.

Wedding Crashers

I feel a little better about this movie after checking on Rachel McAdams age. At first I was thinking, gross! Owen Wilson could be her Dad. But really they are only seven years apart. She just looks 16, she is really my age (29). This movie was a little uneven but overall good summery fun. I loved Vince Vaughn's spastic delivery and in particular his explanation of 'motor boating'. This, like so many movies, follows the good times, fall from grace, redemption formula. I for one would like to see more all 'good times' comedies. Why the manufactured poignancy? The best part of this movie was a frenetic montage set to Shout. This movie needed more montages set to fun wedding staples. I suggest for the DVD extra special unrated version, montages set to We are Family, Old Time Rock n' Roll, Celebrate, and Mony Mony.
