Oprah Makes Pieces latest
Club Choice
Talkshow Queen does Arch's buddy a solid
SALINE, MICHIGAN SEPT 22, 2005
I'm not a big Oprah fan, but
I noticed today that she selected
A Million Little Pieces by James Frey, a good friend and
college classmate of
gd.com guest columnist Arch,
as the latest in her prestigious Book Club. First
mentioned here back in 2003,
the book is a non-fiction account of Frey's brutal time at the
Hazelden Foundation rehab clinic. It's certainly a great
honor and reward for Frey's hard work, but also a bit of good
fortune.

To illustrate, a few minutes after I heard her
mention the book choice, I checked out Amazon.com. There
was immediately an ad on the home page for the book [that's
big]. And in checking out the book's sales rank, get this:
yesterday's rank was #86,234 in Books. Today, only hours
after Oprah's show ran on the east coast, the rank was #9
[that's really big]. Later in the evening, it hit that
number one spot. I have to assume
this is a departure from Oprah's typical choices, but a good
one. The book is very explicit and Frey's attitude about
rehab is counter to the classic 12 step program that many folks
are trying to push his way while at Hazelden. We'll see
what Oprah's fanatics think about it. Oprah knows this
is a controversial choice, here's her top line quote on the
book: "It's a gut-wrenching memoir that is raw and it's so
real".
More importantly, my copy of the book is
signed by the author and even offers this tidbit of sound
advice: "Dools, Don't pick butt, kick butt.". Will
do. |
